Botox® is a compound that originates from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It has the unusual property of being able to deactivate muscles by preventing the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
Cosmetically, this feature is important. Injecting Botox® into facial muscles causes them to relax, smoothing out the skin on top. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nose, and mouth all appear reduced following treatment.
Not surprisingly, Botox® is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. Over 1.5 million injections were performed in the US last year.
Typical Botox® Schedule
Your particular Botox® schedule will depend on your biology and metabolism, which you can discuss with your Board-certified dermatologist at Capital Laser & Skin Care.
However, in general, you’ll need to return to the clinic for treatment once every 4 to 5 months. That’s because the effects of Botox® wear off. At first, there is plenty of toxin to prevent neurotransmitters from sending signals to facial muscles. But over time, your body eliminates it, requiring repeat treatment.
