Does every day feel like a battle against breakouts and inflamed skin? Almost all of us struggle with acne at least once, and it can be hard to beat with over-the-counter treatments alone. Capital Laser & Skin Care’s team of experienced dermatologists can help you find the best acne treatment to regain clear, radiant skin.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It usually appears as pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, or cysts and can be a source of significant physical and emotional distress. Acne most commonly affects teenagers, but it can occur at any age.

When the body produces too much sebum (an oily substance that lubricates the skin) due to hormonal changes, it can combine with dead skin cells to clog the hair follicle. Bacteria can then grow in this plug, leading to inflammation and the formation of pimples.

Several factors can contribute to the development of acne, including hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle factors such as diet and stress. Other factors, such as certain medications or cosmetics, can also contribute to the development of acne. During your consultation with Dr. Tanzi, Dr. Shah, or Dr. Peters at Capital Laser, we’ll evaluate the potential causes of your acne to find the best solution.

How is Acne Treated?

Acne can be treated through various methods, depending on the severity and type of acne. Over-the-counter topical treatments containing ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may be enough to treat mild acne. These treatments reduce inflammation and kill bacteria on the skin’s surface. Prescription topical and oral medications, such as retinoids, antibiotics, or hormonal therapy, may be necessary for more severe acne.

In some cases, procedures such as chemical peels or light therapy may be beneficial to help treat acne. These treatments can improve the results of your topical products and may be especially helpful in fading acne scars.

What are the Best Acne Treatments?

Our dermatologists at Capital Laser will work with you to create a customized treatment plan for your acne. High-quality skincare products are always an essential step toward clear skin, but we also offer multiple in-office procedures that can benefit acne-prone skin or fade acne scars.

We often recommend microneedling or laser treatments with Halo™ or Fraxel for patients with acne. Microneedling stimulates your body’s natural healing response, boosting collagen production. Since collagen is essential to your skin’s structure and health, this boost helps rejuvenate your skin from the inside out. Microneedling can also make your topical treatments more effective by allowing your skin to absorb them better.

Laser treatments like Halo™ and Fraxel are most beneficial for fading acne scars. Like microneedling, these treatments increase collagen production.
