Acne is the most common skin concern seen by dermatologists. Finding real solutions for acne and the scars it leaves behind, is a problem for men and women of all ages. Certain types of acne respond better to specific treatments, which can make it difficult to determine exactly the right treatment for you.

Our board-certified physicians at Capital Laser & Skin Care use many effective treatments that can improve your overall complexion with little to no downtime. When considering treatments, it’s best to first understand what causes acne in the first place.

What Causes Acne?

The pores of our skin are the opening for follicles, which contain a hair and an oil (sebaceous) gland. Sebaceous glands release oil that travels up the hair, out the pore, and onto your skin, keeping your skin lubricated and soft. Pores can get blocked during the lubrication process, preventing the oil from escaping.

Pores may be blocked by:

  • Excessive oil production
  • Dead skin cells, dirt or debris
  • Bacterial proliferation
  • Excessive activity of androgen hormones

In severe cases, these blockages can cause acne. This condition can be painful, lead to scarring, and even cause emotional distress. Hormonal changes, certain medications, and dietary factors can trigger or aggravate acne.

What Is Sebacia?

Sebacia is a less painful and less time-consuming alternative to the currently available acne treatments. The Sebacia Acne Treatment uses an innovative formulation of gold microparticles combined with a 1064 nm laser. The microparticles target sebaceous glands and, when heated by the laser, reduce the number of acne lesions. This in-office procedure can complement your current acne regimen.

How Does It Work To Control Acne?

Under the supervision of board-certified dermatologists at Capital Laser  Skin Care, Sebacia Microparticles are massaged into your skin. These light-absorbing microparticles reach the pores and oil glands in the treatment area. After cooling your skin, a dermatology laser selectively heats these particles with pulses of light, effectively shrinking the oil glands.

This treatment can be completed in 45-60 minutes and has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of acne over time. The Sebacia Acne Treatment does not require the daily application of a topical foam, gel, or ointment.

What Results Can I Expect?

Some patients may experience discomfort and skin redness for a few hours following the first treatment. Since no anesthesia is required, you are able to resume daily activities immediately.

Patients have reported improvement in skin appearance after four to six weeks, with continued improvement up to 12 months. Your individual results may vary, but studies conducted in Europe and the US support these long-term improvements in the reduction of acne.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

A total of three sessions, usually completed over the span of three weeks, are recommended for optimal results. Repeated treatments should not occur less than 30 days after the final application. Our physicians will help you determine whether further maintenance treatments are needed.

I can’t use enough superlatives to describe the doctors and staff at Capital Laser. The doctors are knowledgeable and professional and the staff is highly trained, warm, and accommodating. I highly recommend this practice.
