Having uncomfortable redness and acne-like bumps on your face affects how you feel every time you look in the mirror. At Capital Laser & Skin Care, we understand the impact skin conditions like rosacea can have on your day-to-day life, and our board-certified dermatologists offer several treatment options to help you see clear skin and more confidence.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a fairly common skin condition that varies widely in severity. There are several types of rosacea, including:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea causes redness and expanded blood vessels.
  • Papulopustular rosacea often forms pimple-like pustules and resembles acne.
  • Phymatous rosacea can cause your skin to thicken and become rough over time.
  • Ocular rosacea affects your eyes with irritation and painful eyelid bumps.

Rosacea often flares, fading and worsening repeatedly over time. A dermatologist’s examination will determine whether your skin concerns are caused by this condition.

What Causes Rosacea?

Scientists are still not entirely certain about the causes of rosacea. Your immune system seems to play a role, possibly by overreacting to environmental factors or the presence of common skin organisms. It may also represent a symptom of systemic inflammation. Other contributing factors include:

  • Genetics, with a higher risk if you have a relative with rosacea
  • Age, with most people developing the condition after the age of 30
  • Gender, with women more often affected than men

Not understanding what causes a condition can be frustrating. During your consultation, your dermatologist will explain the most recent research behind rosacea and how we are learning to understand it better.

What’s the Best Rosacea Treatment?

Rosacea treatments focus on relieving your symptoms by decreasing redness, eliminating visible blood vessels, and reducing the appearance of bumps and pustules.

VBeam® Perfecta

Pulsed dye lasers are one of the most effective treatments for redness, spider veins, and burst blood vessels. VBeam® Perfecta is the most advanced pulse dye laser available. It targets the red pigments inside damaged blood vessels, shrinking and collapsing them to reduce redness.

Forever Young BBL™

BBL stands for BroadBand Light, and unlike a laser, Forever Young BBL™ uses many different wavelengths to target a range of pigmentation issues. Along with reducing redness, it also smooths your skin and reduces signs of aging, providing a more even texture and tone.

New treatments for rosacea are under development, and your Capital Laser dermatologists look forward to bringing you new treatment options as they are developed.

What Results Will I See After Rosacea Treatment?

Rosacea is treatable but not currently curable. Most people will need a series of treatments to control their rosacea symptoms, followed by occasional maintenance sessions to keep them from reappearing. Many people find that one or two sessions a year keep their skin clear and smooth.

I appreciate that Dr. Shah takes the time to listen to my concerns. Together we come up with a treatment plan that is best for me and delivers natural results.
