Melasma is a common skin issue that can cause brown or gray patches on the face. There are several factors that contribute to melasma including genetics, hormones, and sun exposure. While melasma is not a life-threatening concern, patients often struggle with the discoloration of their skin. At Capital Laser & Skin Care, we offer a variety of treatments for melasma including Melanage chemical peels to help improve the appearance of discoloration.

How Does It Work?

Once one of our Board-certified Dermatologists has determined that a patient is a good candidate for a Melanage peel, the masque is applied during an in-office visit. The masque will remain on the patient’s face when they leave the office and will stay on for a certain number of hours as determined by the physician. The Melanage masque is completely painless. The patient will be given instructions on how to remove the masque and provided an at-home skincare regimen. Peeling and mild redness may occur during the week following treatment, though some patients may not peel at all. The dermatologist may recommend a follow up treatment, depending on the patient’s goals and skincare needs.

What Results Should I Expect?

Overall, patients should expect to see an improvement in their Melasma, as dark patches will lighten dramatically following the treatment. Melanage peels are also successful in treating skin tone and texture as well as improving hyperpigmentation. The treatment is safe to use on all skin types, including darker skin tones.

Will the Melanage Peel Hurt?

The application of the Melanage peel masque does not cause any irritation; however, in the days following the masque removal, patients may feel a similar sensation to a sunburn. Patients should be mindful of sun exposure in the weeks and months following the peel treatment, and make sure they wear sunscreen and a hat when going outdoors.
