At Capital Laser & Skin Care, one of the most common concerns we hear about is submental fullness – often referred to as the dreaded “double chin.” A jawline can make or break one’s appearance, but surgery can seem a bit extreme if you’re not ready for it. If you’re not ready to undergo extensive surgeries or you just don’t have the time, Kybella® may be the solution. But how long do results last for compared to surgery? Read on to learn more.

How Does Kybella® Work?

Kybella® works to reduce fat under the chin, making for a more contoured appearance along the chin and jawline. The active ingredient in Kybella®, deoxycholic acid, is a molecule that naturally occurs in the body and helps to break down dietary fat cells in the area of concern. As a result, Kybella® can significantly reduce the number of fat cells and keep them off for a considerable period of time.

What’s Treatment Like?

Kybella® treatments can be administered in a single office visit, making them quick and convenient. Injections will be delivered under the skin into the underlying layers of fat. Once injected, the fat cells will be destroyed and then flushed from the body, delivering gradual but noticeable results. Barring minimal swelling that may occur directly after treatment, there are few side effects. Downtime is minimal, so you are free to continue your day after your treatment.

When Will I See Results?

Once the fat cells are broken down and eventually destroyed, the body will need time to flush them. This makes the process gradual. After your procedure, be sure and follow any aftercare instructions given to you by your dermatologist at Capital Laser & Skin Care. You may notice initial results within a few weeks with targeted results reached within a month.

Are Multiple Treatments Needed?

It’s important to get the results you want. Kybella® will need time to work, but sometimes repeated treatments are needed to achieve the optimum results. Many of our patients require two to four treatments to reduce the appearance of submental fullness. To get a better idea of how many treatments you will need, be sure to discuss your goals with your dermatologist during your initial consultation.

How Long Will Results Last?

Unlike other injectables that only shrink fat cells, Kybella® eliminates them for good. Dead fat cells are unable to store or accumulate excess body fat, which makes Kybella® a longer-lasting treatment than its competitors. Few, if any, touch-up treatments will be needed. With a healthy lifestyle involving a good diet and exercise, you can expect long-lasting results – they may even be permanent.
